Technology has assisted the Deaf by making them independent. New advances are making their life easy. Here we will discuss a few examples of technological advancements that are boon for deaf people.
Haptic Gloves
The haptic glove is a sign language glove made by a developer in Kenya. These gloves translate sign language into voice. Sign language is synced into meaningful text that the Android application reads out loud.
Conversion of Hand gestures into Speech by Google Sign Language AI
The software developed by Google turns sign language into speech. The hand gestures are filmed and then transformed by Google’s AI engine into speech. Still, the technology is not fully developed and only limited gestures can be detected reliably. This Google solution seems promising once the optimization of the software is done.
Solar Ear
The use of technology is not easy for people with low incomes. There are about 360 million people all around the globe with hearing loss and more than half of deaf people live in middle to low-income countries. This is a hearing aid battery that is solar-powered and costs minimal. The lifespan of these batteries is 2-3 years.
App that Transcribes
In England, schoolchildren have developed an application as a part of a competition by Amazon Web Services, which transcribes lessons taught in school for deaf people. The name of this app is the Connect Hearo app. It transcribes the words of the teacher. AWS will develop this app and will be used in schools.
