“Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” ~Nelson Mande
The International Deaf Awareness month is here again. This September, you have an opportunity to enlighten the society on what it entails to live without the hearing ability. At some point in their lives, almost everyone will feel a direct or indirect impact of hearing loss.
Ignorance is our biggest enemy, and there are many ways of spreading awareness during this period. Many people around us do not understand the struggles the Deaf endure, but you can help change that. Being deaf is not a disability, but some people have been made to feel so because of stigma. The purpose of the Deaf awareness month is to break the cultural barrier between the Deaf and the hearing communities.
How will you contribute? The best place to start is by educating those around you. For instance, you could take a few days to teach Sign Language to the community. Most hearing people do not know how to interact with the Deaf, and that has a significant impact on their relationship. As such, some Deaf people may end up feeling out of place.
So, as you help bridge the gap, also remember to encourage your colleagues. As stated in Nelson Mandela’s quote, when you avail yourself to those who need your help, you liberate them from their fears. Shine your light to society and improve the future of our world. Remember that spreading awareness is a continuous thing that can be done anytime at any place.
